If you’ve ever been building a repeat pattern in Procreate and suddenly found yourself staring at that thin white line right down the center, a motif that refuses to line up, or a layer that has apparently vanished into another dimension… welcome. You are extremely in the right place.
Pattern making has a funny way of making one small technical hiccup feel much bigger than it actually is. Most of the time, the fix is simple once you know what you’re looking for.
I originally created this troubleshooting guide for students inside my full Procreate Pattern Studio, where we go ohhh so deep into building repeat patterns from start to finish. Since these are the exact kinds of issues that come up again and again, I wanted to make the guide available here too.
Below, you’ll find the most common Procreate pattern problems organized by what you’re actually seeing on your canvas, along with what’s probably causing it and how to fix it.
If you’re currently mid-pattern and starting to feel offended by your iPad, start with the section that sounds closest to your problem and work from there.

One quick note before you dive in: if your issue involves a repeat not lining up, test the tile before you start changing a bunch of things at once. A quick tiled preview usually makes the actual problem much easier to spot.

🎯 Problem: Repeat tile doesn’t line up when setting up quadrants
What’s likely happening:
Procreate’s snapping tool is fab, but if we have a ton of motifs inside a project, that tool takes all of them into account. That means that when you try to move or resize into a quadrant, it’s possible it won’t align properly.
🛠️ Fix it:
- Option 1: Turn off the visibility of the layers you’re not moving. To do this, open the layers panel, and untick the box on each layer.
- Option 2: If you’re resizing toward a quadrant, use exact pixels instead of dragging the shape.
🎯 Problem: Repeat tile doesn’t line up after quadrants are set
What’s likely happening:
You moved or resized something touching an edge after creating your quadrant layout, and now the edges don’t match.
🛠️ Fix it:
- Option 1: Undo back to before you moved layers, or…
- Option 2: Realign elements using snapping or grid guides
💡 Tip: Keep a separate layer group for original motifs and avoid resizing them after they’ve been placed.
🎯 Problem: Pattern shows a white line down the center
What’s likely happening:
There’s a slight gap or shift at the edge of your canvas, which is especially common if using transform or move gestures without proper placement.
🛠️ Fix it:
- Use “Snapping” with “Magnetics” turned on
- Double check that elements are exactly aligned (no decimals in X/Y)
- If you’re resizing toward a quadrant, use exact pixels instead of dragging the shape.
🎯 Problem: Design looks too stiff or “blocky” when repeated
What’s likely happening:
Your layout is too evenly spaced along the same baseline, making the repeat feel obvious.
🛠️ Fix it:
- Try a tossed or half-brick layout instead of a standard grid
- Rotate or flip a few motifs for visual rhythm
- Vary scale of each motif to break up uniformity
💡Tip: Step back and squint, or repeat the tile a few times on a bigger canvas (or use this instant Pattern Tester) to check overall flow.
🎯 Problem: I can’t tell if my repeat works before uploading
What’s likely happening:
You haven’t previewed it tiled yet.

- Use the Pattern Tester for instant previews 🥳
- Use the "pattern preview" technique - copy your tile and paste it four times, then resize each layer into quadrants to check the flow

🎯 Problem: Loading selections won’t work (for half drop & brick)
What likely happening:
If you’re seeing a message that says “You currently have a group selected…” when trying to tap the Selection tool for a group, here’s what’s most likely happening (quick video walkthrough below).
Your selection tool is most likely set to Automatic right now. The annoying thing is that it can't switch to Freehand when a group is selected.
🛠️ Fix it:
- Select any single layer
- Tap the Selection tool at the top
- Tap Freehand on the Selection menu at the bottom
- Deselect and tap the group and it should work now!
🎯 Problem: My layers aren’t showing properly when copying into a new canvas
What’s likely happening:
You dropped your layers directly onto the canvas instead of into the layers panel, and Procreate reversed the order.
🛠️ Fix it:
- Always drag into the layers panel, not onto the canvas
- Reorder manually if needed (bottom becomes top if dropped directly, etc.)
🎯 Problem: My art disappeared / a layer isn’t showing up
What’s likely happening:
You accidentally turned a layer into a clipping mask.
🛠️ Fix it:
- Check the layer stack for anything displaying a small arrow on the left
- Tap the layer and uncheck Clipping Mask in the Layer Options
- If you’re intending to use a clipping mask, make sure it’s directly above its base layer.
🎯 Problem: “Layer limit reached”
What’s likely happening:
Your canvas resolution or dimensions are too large, and your iPad can only support a certain number of layers for that canvas size.
🛠️ Fix it:
- Flatten any finished layers (but duplicate your canvas first so you can go back for edits later)
- Reduce canvas size slightly

🎯 Problem: Art look pixelated
What’s likely happening:
You scaled a motif up/down multiple times, which degrades pixel quality. Procreate’s transformations are destructive after the first adjustment.
🛠️ Fix it:
- Redraw the original element
- For reusable motifs, save them as separate canvases or .png images that you can import
💡 Tip: Transform once, then commit. Avoid tweaking the same layer again and again.
🎯 Problem: Pattern looks blurry when zoomed in
What’s likely happening:
Your canvas resolution is too low (or you've resized elements too many times).
🛠️ Fix it:
- Use a minimum of 300 DPI when you create your canvas
- Avoid resizing the same layer multiple times
- Redraw key elements at full size if needed
🎯 Problem: Colors look different after exporting
What’s likely happening:
- You’re working in the RGB mode Display P3.
- Or you have True Tone or Night Shift turned on
🛠️ Fix it:
- Double check your canvas color profile (Actions > Canvas > Canvas Information > Color Profile). If Display P3, create a new canvas with a regular RGB color profile, then copy your layers to that new canvas. Adjust colors to your liking on the new canvas and it will display correctly on export.
- Preview on a neutral screen (turn off Night Shift)

🎯 Problem: Drawing Assist isn’t working
What’s likely happening:
You set up a drawing guide (like symmetry or perspective), then added a layer. New layers don’t automatically inherit Drawing Assist.
🛠️ Fix it:
- Tap the layer > select Drawing Assist from the Layer Options
- Make sure your guide is still toggled on under Actions > Canvas > Drawing Guide
💡 Tip: Any time you make a new layer and want assist, you have to turn it on manually for that layer
🎯 Problem: Drawing Assist won’t turn off
What’s likely happening:
You turned on Drawing Assist with a symmetry guide, perspective grid, or quickshape, and it’s still appearing after you’re finished using it.
🛠️ Fix it:
- Go to Actions > Canvas > Drawing Guide > toggle off the guide mode
🎯 Problem: Filling shapes creates a weird line between fill and outline
What’s likely happening:
The fill isn’t bleeding fully into the edge of the stroke due to the Color Drop Threshold setting being too low.
🛠️ Fix it:
- When dragging your color into the shape, hold and slide to the right to adjust the Color Drop threshold
- Increase the threshold slightly until the line disappears

🎯 Problem: My brush isn’t responding or is super faint
What’s likely happening:
- Opacity is turned way down (I’ve had this happen by accident and was stumped as to what was happening!)
- Brush settings got changed
🛠️ Fix it:
- Try a different brush to confirm it’s only one brush that’s being affected
- Check the opacity slider (bottom brush slider)
- Reset the brush (tap brush > swipe left > Reset)
🎯 Problem: My brush skips or stutters while I’m drawing
What’s likely happening:
- Your iPad is low on memory
- Brush settings were accidentally changed
- The Apple Pencil nib is loose
🛠️ Fix it:
- Try another brush - see if the issue is specific
- Tighten your Apple Pencil nib
- Turn off all background apps
- Also: check your brush spacing and streamline settings if you customized it recently.
🎯 Problem: My Apple Pencil isn’t working in Procreate
What’s likely happening:
- It’s not connected
- The nib is loose
- It needs to charge
🛠️ Fix it:
- Go to iPad Settings > Bluetooth > reconnect Apple Pencil
- Tighten or replace the nib
- Restart Procreate (and your iPad, if needed)

🎯 Procreate keeps crashing / low on memory
What’s likely happening:
- The canvas is too big
- Your iPad is running low on RAM
🛠️ Fix it:
- Reduce your canvas size or DPI
- Flatten or merge unused layers (but save a duplicate first!)
- Restart your iPad
- Offload unused files or apps to free up memory
- Close apps you’re not using
🔁 Pattern sanity-saving checklist
Before exporting your final repeat tile:
✅ Check for seamless edges (copy and tile it on another canvas)
✅ Flatten only after duplicating your file
✅ Save the .procreate file so you can go back and tweak

And if it isn’t, that usually means you’ve run into something more specific than one of the usual repeat pattern gremlins. Go back to the last point where everything was working, duplicate your file before making any major changes, and test one adjustment at a time. It is soooo much easier to troubleshoot when you aren’t changing five variables at once.
