Quick Wins in SEO: A Reality Check
Ranking high on search engine results pages (SERPs) is a goal for every website owner, and it typically takes a lot of time and a lot of effort. However, moving from page 3 to the top 3 hits on Google is often easier than trying to leap from beyond page 100 to page 3. That's a fact. So, let's capitalize on what you already have – your existing keywords (that you might not even know you’re using).
Step 1: Start with Google Search Console
Before you embark on your SEO journey, ensure you have Google Search Console set up for your site. It's free. Do it. No excuses. It provides a goldmine of keyword data. Here's what you can do:
- Keyword Insights: GSC allows you to see every keyword that your site ranks for. It's like peeking behind the SEO curtain. You'll discover what pages rank for which keywords and how many impressions and clicks those keywords generate. This data is pure gold, and did I mention it's free?
- Export and Analyze: Once inside GSC, export that keyword list into a spreadsheet and sort by impressions to highlight the most promising “quick win” opportunities. I recommend filtering the data to focus on keywords ranking between 11th and 30th positions. That way you won’t be competing with the big giants that have impossible-to-conquer claim from the get go.
Step 2: Optimize Your existing content
Now that you have your list of quick win keywords, it's time to optimize your content. Here's where to include these keywords:
- Title tag: Your title tag is like the headline of a book; it tells readers (and search engines) what your page is about. Incorporate your selected keywords naturally into your title tag (key word: naturally). Make it compelling and informative.
- Headers: Headers (H1, H2, H3, etc.) structure your content and help both readers and search engines understand your content's hierarchy. Use your keywords in headers where relevant. It makes your content more scannable and SEO-friendly.
- Body content: Of course, your keywords should be integrated into your content's body naturally. Aim for a balance between readability and keyword optimization. Avoid keyword stuffing; it's a turn-off for both readers and search engines.
Remember, SEO is an ongoing process. Once you've optimized your existing content with these quick win keywords, keep monitoring your performance in Google Search Console. As you climb the ranks, you'll see that patience and persistence pay off in the world of SEO.
