QUICK FIX: How to Change Small Keyboard on iPad Back to Regular Size (2025)

If you’ve been struggling with a tiny floating keyboard in Procreate (or any other app) on your iPad, you’re not alone! Many users are facing this frustrating issue where the full keyboard just won’t appear—no matter what they try.

You may have heard that pinching out or tapping keyboard settings should fix it, but unfortunately, those don’t work right now (as of Feb 2025). However, I’ve found a workaround that will restore your full-sized keyboard until Apple or Procreate release an update to fix the bug.

Follow these quick steps to get your regular keyboard back!

Why is the iPad keyboard small in Procreate?

The issue is linked to the Scribble feature on the iPad. Scribble allows you to use the Apple Pencil to write directly in text fields, converting handwriting into text. However, for some reason, this setting forces the small floating keyboard to appear instead of the full keyboard.

Right now, there’s no built-in fix, but turning off Scribble does the trick!

How to change the small keyboard back to full size

Here’s the simple workaround to fix the small keyboard problem in Procreate (or any app on iPad):

Step 1: Open Settings on your iPad

  • Tap the Settings app on your home screen.

Step 2: Navigate to Apple Pencil Settings

  • Scroll down and select Apple Pencil from the left-hand menu.

Step 3: Turn off Scribble

  • Under Apple Pencil settings, find the Scribble option.
  • Toggle Scribble off.

Step 4: Restart Procreate (or other app)

To apply the changes, you need to close Procreate (or any other app you’re using) completely.

how to restart your ipad
  • Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to reveal open apps.
  • Swipe up on Procreate (or other app) to close the app.
  • Reopen Procreate (or any other app you were using).

Step 5: Use your full size keyboard

  • Open a text field in Procreate (such as renaming a layer). Your full keyboard should now appear!

Why does this fix work?

The Scribble feature is designed to replace the standard keyboard with handwriting recognition. However, due to [what I’m assuming is] a current bug, it prevents users from switching between the full keyboard and the small one. By turning Scribble off, the iPad defaults back to the regular keyboard.

Will the keyboard issue on the iPad be fixed in a future update?

Since this issue is likely related to iOS or Procreate updates, I’d like to assume a future fix will come, whether intended or not 😅 In the meantime, this workaround ensures you regain full control over your keyboard without any issues.

While this fix is a workaround, it’s the best solution right now. Hopefully, Apple or Procreate will address this issue in an upcoming update.
